History

Project Northstar was founded in 1989 (as the Homeless Children's Tutorial Project) by a multi-racial coalition of community leaders from the Washington, DC Chapters of the Coalition of 100 Black Women and Concerned Black Men and lawyers from three local law firms. Concerned about the plight of children living in overcrowded homeless shelters, these community leaders intervened with educational assistance, mentors and nutritious meals.

Program

Project Northstar is a one-on-one tutoring & mentoring program matching children with their own adult tutor/mentor. Students enter the program as early as first grade and can remain through high school. Every week students attend a 90-minute evening session where they work on homework and exercises to strengthen reading and math skills. Volunteers also meet with their students on weekends for mentoring and enrichment activities.

Every student is assigned to an Academic Case Manager who tracks their academic progress.

Every summer we operate a variety of different educational programs including an intensive remedial reading program for our neediest students.

We also provide a meal to students at the beginning of each tutoring session as well as transportation to and from tutoring to ensure consistent attendance.

Volunteers

Volunteer tutors and mentors are the heart of Project Northstar. They are lawyers, government employees, educators, college students, business executives and retirees and come from a variety of racial and socio-economic backgrounds. Volunteers make a one-year commitment and volunteer their time one evening a week plus at least one weekend activity a month. Frequently volunteers remain with the program for several years realizing they receive as much, if not more, than they give.
